Inspiration is everywhere.
This past weekend I watched the new Cantinflas DVD and I was inspired to create a look straight from the genre depicted in the movie. The true story of Mexico's greatest and most beloved comedy film star, Mario "Cantinflas" Moreno alternates from the 1930's and 1950's to share his journey from modest beginnings to superstardom. Growing up in the Latin culture I knew of Cantinflas but it wasn't until after I saw the movie that I truly became an admirer of his. His unique tale truly was a breath of fresh air for me. It's amazing how he went from being a janitor, boxer and bullfighter to becoming famous around the world and staying relevant so many generations later.
If you're looking for some inspiration I recommend you watch the Cantinflas DVD. Visit the movie website by clicking here.
I've always had a thing for the classic looks from the 1920's, 30's 40's and 50's. Sometimes I wish our generation still dressed like they did back then because there's something special about dressing your best. Throughout the Cantinflas movie the women were adorned with jewels, pearls, furs, elegant fabrics, high heels and effortless hair. Hence, why I incorporated all of those details into my inspired look. "Shape" and "sheen" were popular buzzwords in fashion during the 1950's, hemlines and waistlines grew shorter in 1953 so to pay homage to that I decided to go for a sleek/slender elegant look. I played up my waistline by wearing a skinny belt with a bow to add a little feminine touch. Kept the look sophisticated by sticking with a neutral color scheme, various textures (faux fur, suede and cotton) and of course timeless red lipstick.
I noticed a woman wearing a turban during a scene in the movie and decided to incorporate one into my look. It's a great way to conceal a bad hair day, don't you think? :)
